Reviving a Butterfly

My butterfly wasn’t looking so pretty after last summer out in the elements. I bought this butterfly before I even had a yard, because I liked it so much.  I wasn’t going to give up on it now!  Instead of tossing it in the trash, I repainted it.

The tips of the wings were very rusted.

First I needed to remove the loose old paint and rust. Steel wool worked well.

I made sure to get the rust chips and dust off the butterfly, and then it was spray paint time!

Always make sure to protect the surface underneath the project and paint in a well-ventilated place. I was working in my sunny yard.

After painting the front, I waited to let it dry. Then I flipped it over to get the back and promptly ran out of paint. I’d used this flat black on my trellis and I guess there wasn’t a lot left.

In my garage I found some brown paint I had bought for another project. Since the back of the butterfly will be against the fence, no one will know! Oh wait, I just told you…

After letting it dry completely, I hung it back up on the fence.

Yay! My little welcome sign doesn’t look so lonely anymore!
